And the actor chosen to play Freddie Mercury is...

When we first heard that a movie about Freddie Mercury was in the pipeline we instantly met it with an inhalation of breath; how can any actor fairly portray one of the greatest and most charismatic frontmen of all time? But today we’ve been hit with relief with the news that the (almost) always excellent Sacha Baron Cohen will be that actor.

Not only have the GK Films producers picked their lead actor perfectly they’ve also managed to secure screenplay duties from the powerhouse behind Frost/Nixon, The Queen and Damned United, Peter Morgan.

The feature length movie will tell the story of Queen’s early years, climaxing with their now seminal Live Aid show at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Surviving Queen members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon are also said to be involved with the project which is expected to start filing next year.

What could have a been a sure-fire disaster suddenly looks like being one of the most highly anticipated films for years.
