BBC 6 Music saved

You may remember the wailing and knashing of teeth from fedora wearing indie boys at the reported closure of minority stations 6 Music and The Asian Network, with the self-righteous rockist outrage never extending itself to the Asian station. No, what was important was that we got to keep the audience for floppy haired bores like The View, a disproportionately powerful media voice, happy.

Anyway, ranting aside, the BBC Trust has rejected the case for 6 Music’s closure, making for many a skinny-trousered jig all across the home counties. Ethnic minorities beware however; your station might still get the chop. But don’t worry, we’re sure there’ll be a powerful campaign in the music press for you too, right? Right?

‘The Trust concludes that, as things stand, the case has not been made for the closure of 6 Music,’ said Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons. ‘The Executive should draw up an overarching strategy for digital radio. If the director general wanted to propose a different shape for the BBC's music radio stations as part of a new strategy, the Trust would consider it.

‘The Trust would consider a formal proposal for the closure of the Asian Network, although this must include a proposition for meeting the needs of the station's audience in different ways.’
