Bestival 2011 news

Organisers of Bestival have announced this year’s fancy dress theme. And the Isle of Wight festival, which takes place between 8-11 September, can now count on a performance by hip hoppers Public Enemy, who join Robyn and The Cure on this year’s bill.

But as much as the music it’s the carnival atmosphere that marks out Bestival from its festival peers, epitomised by the event’s fancy dress parade.

This year the theme, chosen by organizer Rob Da Bank, is Rock Stars, Pop Stars and Divas.

Da Bank told NME: ‘Dressing up and escapism has always been a big part of Bestival and our faithful crew are mega inventive to the point of eccentricity! This year's theme of Rock Stars, Pop Stars and Divas should give everyone enough ideas to really let rip with some outrageous, weird and downright flamboyant outfits. There are no excuses!’

Compared with previous themes Outer Space and Fantasy, it seems a little tame. But Mr Da Bank hopes it’ll be enough to get the creative juices flowing. ‘ I hope everyone doesn't take it too literally,' he said. 'I'd love to see some Frank Zappas, Captain Beefhearts, Skream and Bengas or a Karen Carpenter as much as the better known faces,’ he said. ‘This has got to be a great opportunity for some group action too! Personally, it's a toss-up between Dolly Parton and Prince.’

See you there!
