Captain Beefheart dies aged 69

Legendary avant-garde musician and artist Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, died yesterday at the age of 69.

Captain Beefheart, backed by the various incarnations of his Magic Band, is rightly considered one of the most influential American musicians of the 1960s and 1970s.

The seminal band, which blended blues, jazz and rock, produced over a dozen albums in a twenty-year career with 1969’s ‘Trout Mask Replica’ the pinnacle of their output.

Van Vliet, who walked away from music following the 1982 album ‘Ice Cream For Crow’ to concentrate on his work as a visual artist, died of complications from multiple sclerosis.
