China lifts censorship music ban on Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was placed on China’s list of banned artists in 2011 when the country’s Minister of Culture claimed that the pop singer and other artists was “creating confusion in the order of the online music market, and damaging the nation’s cultural security” and the songs were deemed of 'vulgar content.'

Among the 100 foreign songs that were placed on China’s blacklist, six of them were Lady Gaga’s: 'The Edge of Glory', 'Hair', 'Marry the Night', 'Americano', 'Judas' and 'Bloody Mary' from her 2011 album 'Born this Way'.

Now after three years after the censorship crackdown, Lady Gaga’s music can now be heard again in China, as her latest album ARTPOP will be able to go on sale legally, albeit somewhat censored in order not to disturb the country’s very sensitive cultural security.

Gaga’s ARTPOP album cover features a nude sculpture that was created by American artist Jeff Koons, who is referenced in Gaga's single 'Applause'.

The singer is seen cupping her breasts with the "gazing ball" (one of her props in her VMA performance) between her splayed legs, and a cropped version of the "The Birth of Venus" by Botticelli, with a black and white series of photographs of "Apollo & Daphne" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the background.

The album’s cover was deemed too racy and was censored in several Middle Eastern countries and Indonesia, so it was photoshopped with a bigger ball to cover up Lady Gaga’s nakedness and she also ended up wearing a pair of black tights, and that’s the same cover that Chinese fans will be getting.

Chinese censors also decided that one song title was just a little too explicit and transformed 'Sexxx Dreams' to 'X Dreams'.

Gaga responded to the lifted ban via Twitter saying she was excited to have ARTPOP on sale in China and hoped she could tour the country soon.

“I'm so excited!!!! The Chinese Government Approved ARTPOP to be released in China with all 15 songs! Next I hope I can come to perform!”

According to the BBC, ARTPOP debuted in the UK at number one and has shifted more than 170,000 copies and has sold more than half a million copies in the US, but her previous albums have so far been more commercially successful.
