Dead flowers

Hardened rocker Keith Richards has been blamed for the death of a rare orchid in a New York Public Library.

In an act subliminally connected to the death of flower power, the Stones’ guitar wizard sent the library plant to its death with just a few puffs of cigarette smoke.

The orchid, a Phalaenopsis amabilis, was on display at the main branch of the New York Public Library, where Richards spoke on 29 October, reading from his new memoir, entitled (ironically enough), Life.

After a tour of the premises, the guitarist was invited to sit ‘backstage’ in the office of Marie d'Origny, deputy director of the library's Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. When D'Origny arrived, Richards was characteristically smoking a cigarette with the window open. According to the library's blog: ‘Between the cold and the smoke, the little orchid never stood a chance.’

Yes, and at the poor plant’s funeral they played Sympathy for the Orchid, Dead Flowers, Plant it Back and a special version of Where Have all the Flowers gone?
