Dishing up the Discs

The complete archives of the cult radio programme Desert Island Discs are to be made available online, the BBC has announced.

The much-loved programme was first aired in 1942. The format, if you didn’t already know, features famous guests chatting about the special songs they’d take with them in the event of being cast away on a desert island. The likes of Paul McCartney and Morrissey have appeared on the show.

The Guardian reports that under the BBCs new archiving scheme, some five hundred editions of the show will be available to listen to online following an agreement with the family of the programme’s creator, the novelist and writer Roy Plomley, who presented the programme until 1985.

From next month you’ll be able to go online and listen to some of the Desert Island Disc gems of yesteryear. Hooray!
