Early Dre-tirement

Whether or not you like his records, you've got to admire Dr Dre's relaxed work ethic. His first solo album, The Chronic, came out in 1992. The second, 2001, didn't come out till nine years later (in, er, 2001.) And the follow-up, Detox, is due out... in 2011!

Nine years, then ten... that means Dre's fourth album would be due eleven years after Detox, or in 2022. By this time, the Doctor would be fifty-seven.

So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that Dre says Detox will be his last album. As the NME reports:

'As far as me going into the mic booth, that shit is over,' he told XXL magazine. 'I'm getting older… I'm always going to talent-scout and try to find new artists to work with. But, yeah, that's it.'

Of course, history is littered with a slew of fake hip-hop 'retirements.' Eminem released a greatest-hits called Curtain Call, and declared himself a producer only, until he returned with last year's Relapse. And Jay-Z was 'retired' from 2003 to 2006.

So we'll take this news with a pinch of salt...
