Elbow join the Olympic team

The BBC looked for a very British act to provide the theme for their London Olympics coverage. Who better than Elbow? Slightly overweight, a bit old, but still capable of the occasional soaring moment of crowd-pleasing exertion, they were the perfect choice.

The band have recorded a six-minute track which will be used as the soundtrack for BBC Television coverage of the Games next summer, providing the backing for, we hope, all those montages of tear-jerking British medal celebrations.

Singer Guy Garvey remained firmly on-message with his reaction to the news. "We are knocked out to be involved and it's been quite a challenge," he said. "We have feelings of real responsibility as we will be the soundtrack to so many images of personal sacrifice and endeavour while the nation roots for and celebrates with Team GB."

Elbow’s anthemic One Day Like This is already the go-to choice for every TV producer who wants a soaring, atmospheric track to juxtapose with a goals highlights package or the closing credits of an epic sporting encounter.

The new commission seems to enshrine Elbow’s status as national treasures. 2011 has been a landmark year for the band. Their fifth album, Build A Rocket Boys! reached number 2 in the UK charts. The headlining slot at Glastonbury in June was followed by a series of triumphant festival performances in the summer.

The band is presently working on new material for their next album, and probably wondering how many free Olympics tickets they can score on the basis of their BBC commission.
