Elton cancels Vegas shows

Elton John has been forced to cancel a week of shows in Las Veghas after being taken to hospital. The singer was suffering from a severe respiratory infection and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles for treatment.

He was discharged and given antibiotics but told to rest for a week, resulting in the postponement of the high-profile and lucrative shows at the Vegas Colosseum. Speaking to TMZ, Elton said, "It feels strange not to be able to perform these 'Million Dollar Piano' concerts at the Colosseum. I love performing the show and I will be thrilled when we return to complete the 11 concerts. All I can say to the fans is 'sorry I can't be with you'."

The mild health scare comes a month after the singer had suggested that, if he hadn’t cleaned up his act, he could have met the same fate as Whitney Houston. "I could so easily have ended up like her," he said. "It's a miracle I didn't because I'm sure I did as much cocaine as she ever did."

The singer should recover in time to fulfil his UK live performances in June. The shows visit some venues not customarily associated with rock n’ roll, including Somerset County Cricket Ground, Harrogate Great Yorkshire Showground, Blackpool Tower Festival Headland and Falkirk Arena.

Elton also has a new album scheduled for release in the autumn. The album is called The Diving Board, and he said it was his most exciting work for a long time. In a regrettable lapse into American speak, he said he was "psyched" about the release.
