Gorillaz Opera MKII

Just as his pet project Gorillaz takes the globe by an animated storm Damon Albarn has revealed that he’s also busy working on a follow up to his critically acclaimed monkey opera – ‘Monkey: A Journey To The West' in 2007.

Spilling the beans to NYMag the work hungry Blur man said the new show will see him work with partner in crime Jamie Hewitt and comic book scribbler Alan Moore (The Watchmen & V For Vendetta) and will be based on the life of John Dee – a 16th century alchemist and all round magician.

‘It's based on the life of John Dee, who was a very influential force in Elizabethan Europe, especially England’ muttered Damon to the website, ‘he was responsible for creating the concept of the British Empire. So he affects all our lives in one way or another. He was an alchemist. It's about his life.’

He added: ‘this will be the first time I've stopped writing for six months. I've just been reading about Hermetic magic and catalysts and philosophy, which is what all of his stuff is based on — Euclid and Pythagoras and all of that stuff. It's a lot. And it's been brilliant.’

Gorillaz bring their 2D extravaganza to London’s Round House later this week.
