'I faked Ian Curtis' signature'

Former New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook has admitted that he used to sign Ian Curtis’ name on Joy Division memorabilia, in news that will make collectors and geeks very angry indeed. They’re probably shaking their fists aggressively as this is being read.

Although said geeks might be better served by remembering that Curtis killed himself on 18 May 1980, and if your stuff is signed by him after that date – it’s probably not genuine. A genuinely special talent he might have been, but Jesus he is not.

‘I did have a reputation for doing Ian Curtis' autograph for a long time,’ he said. ‘There's some guy who had (Joy Division's debut EP) An Ideal For Living and it was signed by all four members of the band and dated. I went in and said, “Have you not noticed that the date is after Ian died?” It was me, I did them as a joke!’
