James Arthur wins X Factor 2012 final

We kinda knew how it all was going to end when, with voting still open, Rio Ferdinand and 1D members admitted James Arthur was their personal favourite to win the competition. We can either take it as they were merely reflecting a nation's opinion, or as an action that has spurred thousands of Harry Styles and Man Utd fans to pick up the phone and vote for the blonde 24 year old from Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

Either way, it was a tight one throughout: James Arthur was crowned X Factor 2012's winner after going head-to-head with a Jahmene Douglas in top form and bursting with new-found confidence. They both wooed Manchester Central's 10,000-strong live audience, but at the end, the heartthrob's tormented style won over the viewers at home and he received the 54% percent of the public vote.

James Arthur, barely able to speak, commented the results with a "thank you, thank you so much. Have I really won? Wow. I don't know what to say. I've just got to say thank you to the people who voted for me", while Jahmene Douglas, in true gentleman style, added: "It's such a blessing to share a stage with such a talent" and advised him to "use it wisely".

A proud Nicole Scherzinger, who's been mentoring both Arthur and Douglas throughout the competition, spoke of her delight with the result fighting away the tears: "He (Arthur) wanted this, he willed this to happen. He deserves this so much. And Jahmene - I'm so proud of both my boys".

The star-studded live final was overhall a success, but we still don't know how many millions viewers tuned in to watch on ITV the results of the show as well as the performances of One Direction, Rihanna and Emeli Sandé. Most of the thirteen final acts also turned up on stage - including Rylan, Ella Henderson and Union J - while (in case you were wondering) Christopher "Double Cheese" Maloney lived up to the rumours that were circulating during the competition, by getting banned from the live finals for showing up drunk to rehearsal and insulting all fellow contestants.

James Arthur's first single "Impossible" (a cover of R&B singer Shontelle's 2010 track) is already downloadable from the internet and will be available in the shops from Wednesday.
