Johnny Marr forbids David Cameron from liking The Smiths

It’s a rocky road between politician and musician – who can forget Gordon Brown claiming to be a fan of The Arctic Monkeys without being able to recall a single song title, or, back in the 80s, Ronald Reagan making electoral capital of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA?

David Cameron has joined the ranks of politicians who name-drop musicians to look cool by waxing lyrical about The Smiths on a number of occasions. But guitarist Johnny Marr is having none of it, tweeting: ‘'David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't. I forbid you to like it.’

Marr is not the first musician to prickle at the idea of being one of the Conservative Prime Minister’s favourites. When Cameron professed his love for The Jam early last year on the BBC, frontman Paul Weller responded with, ‘Is he thick? He probably thinks 'Eton Rifles' is a song about him and his mates at school'.
