In a rare show of pop stars having some principles, Run DMC have refused to play at their own inauguration into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame out of respect for murdered DJ Jam Master Jay.
They had previously vowed never to perform again after he was shot in a recording studio in the Jamaica district of Queens in New York in 2002, and despite the surviving member Run and DMC being honoured at a ceremony in Cleveland, they staying true to that intention, turning down quite a marketing opportunity in the process.
'For me, I tell people, “Do you want to see me and Run running around without Jay?”' said DMC, real name Darryl McDaniels. 'They tell me I could get Grandmaster Flash. But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn't be right. I can't replace my drummer.'
