Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift Triumph at MTV Europe Music Awards

Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber were crowned king and queen of last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards with each of the superstars taking home a three gong haul.

The ceremony in Frankfurt, one of the biggest nights in pop’s annual calendar saw Carly Rae Jepson indulge in a little crowd surfing to celebrate walking off with Best Song and Best Push. Best Push may sound like a PR firm category, but it is in fact a breakthrough award separate from Best New Act.

Best New Act was scooped up by One Direction who also shimmered off with an award honouring their fans, while on the grungier side of the equation, Linkin Park triumphed in the Best Rock Act.

The ubiquitous David Guetta romped home in the Best Electronic Act category, while Lana Del Rey took the Best Alternative Act leaving many observers wondering where that left mainstream. In the absence of a Most Ludicrous Wardrobe award, Nicki Minaj had to settle for Best Hip Hop Act.

But in many ways, this was the night Asian pop was finally recognized by the international pantheon. Best Worldwide Act was won by Chinese Mandopop star Han Geng, while another man, now infamous for his hysterically funny dance moves was the outright winner in Best Video. You guessed it. Psy,with Gangnam Style. Apart from being the most successful viral in Youtube history, Gangnam Style was also a masterful parody of itself and a thoroughly deserved winner.

But the night belonged to Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. Swift landed Best Female Act, Best Live Act and Best Look while Justin Bieber swept Best Male Act, Best Pop Act and Best World Stage. It was indeed a triumphant night for pop, with one particularly poignant moment as Global Icon was awarded posthumously to Whitney Houston, bringing a tear to many an eye.
