Justin Bieber leaves jail after DUI arrest

Justin Bieber has been bailed after being charged with driving under the influence of drugs or drink and resisting arrest. According to reports in Miami’s local press, the teenage singer was arrested after drag racing a Lamborghini. He was caught doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. When he was taken in the star kept asking why he had been arrested and insisted that he was just returning from a recording session. His arrest was followed by a trip to jail and then a court appearance via a videolink, which probably wasn’t the sort of video the Canadian was expecting to make.

The teen star was charged with driving on an expired licence and his bail was set at $2,500 (£1,500). He had his trademark hood up when he walked from the police station. He waved to fans from an SUV as he drove away in a scene that could easily have accompanied any public appearance.

According to the arrest report, he failed a sobriety test and swore at the arresting officer when he was stopped. The star had “bloodshot eyes” and smelt of alcohol, and police said that the drag race had not been an act of over exuberance as Bieber’s cronies had blocked the Miami Beach road with two SUVs so the 19 year old singer could race a friend. The race was against R&B singer Khalil Sharieff who drove a Ferrari.

It seems that in America, the police’s top people never miss an opportunity in front of the cameras. There was a press conference about this in which the Miami Beach Chief of Police Raymond Martinez took time out of his hectic schedule that must involve dealing with all manner of serious crimes to speak about the teenage star’s arrest. Martinez said that Bieber didn’t come quietly but he resisted “without violence”. Martinez also told the press that Bieber “did acknowledge that he did take a prescription medication and that he had been smoking marijuana and that he did consume a beer.”
