Kurt Cobain's lost solo album

Kurt Cobain recorded a full-length solo album before he died, it has been revealed. Erik Erlandson, guitarist with Hole, Cobain’s widow Courtney Love’s band, has heard the recordings, and believes they would have changed the way Cobain was viewed as an artist.

Speaking in a TV interview with US channel Fuse, Erlandson said. "He was headed in a direction that was really cool. It would have been his White Album. That's really what he was going towards, a solo album but working with different people."

Erlandson witnessed Cobain playing some of the songs. "I was really excited about some of the stuff he was working on," he said. "I got to see him play it in front of me. That's why I was really sad when he died. He was cut short. Who knows where this music would have gone?"

Erlandson hopes the music would be released, but admits that is the decision of others. He might like to ask Courtney Love about that. "I think the fans would be a lot happier," he said. "If nobody ever hears those songs, except for like three people, then that's the way it goes. I heard some talk about somebody putting together some raw, rough acoustic thing."

The recordings feature one cover version. "I won’t say what it is," Erlandson teases. "I don't own the stuff. I just hope that one day it will be released for fans. It’s just so heartbreaking. It’s not surprising. It’s a very sweet, just touching song."

Probably not a version of Chuck Berry’s My Ding-A-Ling then.
