Let it be veg

Vegetarian Paul McCartney is encouraging India to declare a national vegetarian day to celebrate compassion toward animals and meat-free lifestyles.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claim Macca sent a letter to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urge that a day decicated to vegetarianism could possibly save animals while at the same time helping to protect the environment and people's health.

The letter says that such a day would be ‘a celebration of life.’

The U.N. food agency in 2003 estimated that 42 per cent of India's 1.2 billion people are vegetarian. This is due mainly to financial and religious reasons. However, strict Hindus and Jains do not eat meat at all.

Prime Minister Singh's office could not at the time of writng confirm receipt of McCartney's letter.
