Like indie music, Oxford?

When one thinks about the most important cities in British pop music, Oxford isn’t exactly the first one that pops into your head. Apart from being the home to one of the world’s premier Universities (maybe the premier) and having lots of nice stuff to look at, its perception in the public eye is that of a posh, twee little place. And mostly the public eye is right. However, the city has been home to some of Britain’s best bands, including Radiohead, Supergrass and Foals, and now there is a documentary to honour the place and its musical heritage.

Called ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’, it’s been put together by local director John Spira, and looks like a curious little product. It features a whole swathe of talking heads, some unheard of and others genuinely famous: Gaz Coombes from Supergrass turns up, as do Radiohead, alongside rather a large number of bitter musicians who never made it, and seemingly have an axe to grind with the industry, The Man and the world. However it doesn’t yet have a distribution deal, so if you fancy helping out an independent movie maker raise the cash to release the film, go here.
