Lily says save 6 Music

Lily Allen has written in The Guardian to protest at the possible closing down of BBC 6 Music, the home for many of some of the country’s best radio programmes – including Adam and Joe – and a playlist that isn’t all chart fodder. Rumours that the station was to be closed (alongside the Asian Network and huge swathes of the website) came out last week, with a BBC report that is supposedly putting quality ahead of quantity. But a Facebook campaign bemoaning the decision, as well as much public wailing from fans has put pressure on the Beeb to backtrack.

‘It will be awful if they do decide to close BBC 6 Music, and I hope that the backlash they've received so far will make them think twice,’ she wrote in the paper. ‘Clearly it will continue to cause an uproar, which is the last thing the BBC want. Perhaps they weren't expecting this level of interest in a niche station.

‘I read that they want to invest in quality over quantity, but how does that make sense? If they close 6 Music, instead of acts like Seasick Steve and presenters like Lauren Laverne, it will be the Pussycat Dolls and Fearne Cotton on Radio 1.’
