Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins gets 35 years for sex crimes
Ian Watkins has been handed a 35-year sentence for a string of sexual offences against children including the rape of a small baby. The mothers of the children, known throughout the trail as Woman A and Woman B, were given 14 and 17 year sentences respectively for their part in the crimes as they offered their children to the singer for these depraved sex acts.
Mr Justice Royce jailed Watkins for an initial 29 year spell which he will have to serve two thirds of before he can be brought in front of a parole board. If he’s released early, he’ll serve the remainder of the term on licence which means adhering to certain conditions under the watchful eye of the Probation Service. The judge added that no matter whether he is released early or after 29 years, he will also have to serve an additional 6 years on licence, which brings his overall sentence to 35 years.
During summing up Royce said: “Those who have appeared in these courts over many years see a large number of horrific cases. This case, however, breaks new ground. You, Watkins, achieved fame and success as the lead singer of Lostprophets. You had many fawning fans. That gave you power. You knew you could use that power to induce young female fans to help satisfy your insatiable lust and take part in the sexual abuse of their own children.”
During the hearing the court was shown images found on the singer’s hard drive. In all there were 90 images of child abuse, 24 of which were categorised as “severe”. There were also 22 bestiality images found on Watkin’s computer.
Royce said Watkins has “a dark and sinister side” but Watkins was emotionless while he stood in the dock. When the sentence was delivered, those in the public gallery shouted “yes”, a sentiment that we all must share.
