Bruno Mars may have ruled as Billboard’s 2013 Best Artist of the Year , but for MTV the hottest artist in 2013 was, you guessed it, the controversial Miley Cyrus.

The head of MTV's music and talent programming strategy, Amy Doyle, explained the choice: "She dominated the music charts and critics' best-of lists while creating some of the year's most memorable moments."

Well Doyle isn’t wrong.

Miley’s raunchy twerking performance during the VMA’s grabbed headlines all over the world, and then she hit the headlines again during the MTV European awards in Amsterdam when she pulled out a joint from her purse and lit up on stage.

The Miley Cyrus phenomenon is so popular that even Glee did an episode on her, defending twerking saying it's "about freedom of expression."

While the high priestess of Vogue, Anna Wintour , may have raised both eyebrows and found the pop star’s performance extremely distasteful and dropped her from the December cover, journalist Barbara Walters considers Cyrus one of the most fascinating people of the year.

Despite not receiving any Grammy nominations this year, Miley's "Bangerz," album debuted at number oneon the U.S. Billboard 200.

Her single "Wrecking Ball" currently holds the Vevo record for most views in the first 24 hours of its release, and the record for being the fastest video to reach 100 million hits, which makes it the Most Watched Music Video of 2013, while her artist’s page on MTV is the most visited.

Cyrus is the third star to be nominated MTV's Best Artist of the Year after Katy Perry(2012) and One Direction(2011) and she’ll continue to be a headline grabber because she is going to usher in 2014with a performance from Times Square on New Year's Eve.

Here’s MTV’s top ten artists of 2013:

  • 1. Miley Cyrus
  • 2. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
  • 3. Justin Timberlake
  • 4. Kanye West
  • 5. One Direction
  • 6. Katy Perry
