Moby ‘Baffled’ by his own success

The musical mastermind behind the multi-million selling album ‘Play’ has revealed that his success in the music industry has taken him completely by surprise.

Richard Melville Hall, better known as Moby, has expressed his bemusement at his popularity in an interview with The Independent in which he admitted ‘I'm perpetually baffled by the whole thing. I've made records that everyone has hated and I've loved, and made records that everyone has loved and I've deemed, at best, mediocre. I don't know how all this happened. I've honestly never had a clue what I'm doing.’

Moby, who has released 10 albums in the last two decades and has just relocated to 1920's renovated castle in Los Angeles, gained worldwide success with the 1999 Blues-infused album ‘Play’. Despite the album’s considerable commercial success (almost every single track on the album was licensed to various advertisements, films, TV shows) Moby swears he thought, not only that is was mediocre, but that ‘it would end [his] career’. Needless to say, it actually catapulted him to fame and brought him shed loads of money.

It seems Moby’s disbelief at his own ability to make it stems back to his early 20's when the unassuming vegan presumed that he would have to ‘look for work in a bookshop and music would become like a hobby.'
