Monkey magic

Damon Albarn is a bit like a hyperactive 5 year old loaded with a bag of pick’n’mix: he can’t sit still for a second. Whether it's a Blur reunion, a monkey opera, muso side-project The Good, The Bad and The Queen or animated band Gorillaz, he always has something gently simmering on the hob.

Now the Blur talisman has revealed that Gorillaz are close to finishing and releasing their third album, to be titled ‘Plastic Beach’.

‘This whole Gorillaz album,'Plastic Beach', which is nearly finished now, started off as 'Carousel', he told The Guardian. ‘It's sort of about the mythical aspects of Britain. Obviously, because it's Gorillaz we've moved it to a different place, but it still maintains a lot of that melancholy.’

In the interview with music journalist Paul Morley, Damon also talks candidly about weekend telly fluff The X-Factor: ‘I'm making this album the most pop record I've ever made in many ways, but with all my experience to present something with some depth to it’.

‘I've tried to connect pop sensibility with trying to make people understand the essential melancholy of buying a ready made meal in loads of plastic packaging. People who watch X Factor might have some emotional connection to these things, that detritus that accompanies what seems the most essential thing in people's lives these days, the celebrity, the voyeurism.’

‘Plastic Beach’ is due out next year, as is a film about Blur, a possible The Good, The Bad and The Queen album and another Opera. Wowzers.
