One Direction, Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie triumph at BRIT Awards 2014
The 34th edition of the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards, better known as the BRIT Awards was held at the O2 Arena in London yesterday evening which saw the Arctic Monkeys and One Direction walk away with the most awards, winning two each, while David Bowie won the British Male Solo Artist gong.
One Direction took home the Global Success award for the second time, but only four members of the band were initially present to accept because Harry Styles was slightly late, justifying his momentary absence with, "I'm really sorry, I was having a wee, the toilets are ages away. What did we win?”
The boy band also won the award for best British video, that was determined for the first time via Twitter vote during the ceremony.
Arctic Monkeys won the awards for best British group and British album of the year, making them the first band to win both awards three times.
The top moment of the evening however was David Bowie being crowned Britain's best male solo artistfor the first time since 1984, for his "The Last Day" album - his first album in 10 years – making him also the oldest winner of a BRIT Award in history.
Bowie wasn’t present to accept the award, but instead sent super model Kate Moss on his behalf.
"You maniacs didn't think David Bowie was actually gonna be here! David Bowie's too cool for that! He don't do this shit!," crowed award presenter Noel Gallagher.
"David Bowie is sending his representative on Earth, which is the one and only Kate Moss, who is going to accept this award on his behalf."
"Good evening ladies and gentlemen David has asked me to say this," said Moss. "In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume, that Kate's wearing, live on the moon. Kate comes from Venus, and I from Mars. So that's nice. I'm completely delighted to have a BRIT for being best male, and I am - aren't I, Kate?"
She ended Bowie's acceptance speech with, "I think it's a great way to end the day. Thank you very, very much. And Scotland, stay with us."
The event also saw performances by American artists of the likes of Katy Perry who sang "Dark Horse" who dressed as a modern day Cleopatra, Bruno Mars – who will be adding the International Male Solo Artist award to his overflowing trophy case – and he performed "Treasure, " while Beyoncé gave the world the first televised performance of "XO.
