Ozzy splits from Sharon and fights booze and drugs relapse

The Osbourne family continues to offer fascinating material to students of the baser side of human nature. The fly-on-the-wall documentary series made unlikely TV stars of the family, barely sentient occasional Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy, relentlessly ambitious wife Sharon and tormented offspring Jack and Kelly.

It may also have contributed to the breakup of the family. Sharon has parlayed the exposure into a lucrative career as a talent show judge and rentaquote, while Ozzy has gone back to what he knows best, the heavy rocker’s staple diet of booze and drugs. The couple are now living apart.

Ozzy was in remorseful mood on his Facebook page, offering a lugubrious apology. "For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs," he said, to the surprise of few. "I was in a very dark place and was an asshole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober."

It’s a start, although given the man’s talent for self-destruction, nobody is counting any (headless) chickens just yet. "Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing," he added. "I’m just trying to be a better person. I would like to apologise to Sharon, my family, my friends and my bandmates for my insane behaviour during this period... and my fans."

Sharon has a new house in Beverly Hills and is listening to offers of more TV work. In a cruel reflection of the way the music industry is going, a talent show judge is now a far hotter and more marketable prospect than a clapped-out Brummie heavy rocker.

Ozzy attributes their split to Sharon’s obsession with a celebrity lifestyle and her pursuit of fame. He told The Sun that he never wanted to do The Osbournes. "Sharon got a career out of it but I’m not interested," he said. "I don’t like showbiz."
