Katy Perry’s next role could be something of a stretch for the singer and wannabe actress. She is in line to play Freddie Mercury’s girlfriend in the planned biopic of the late Queen frontman.
Sacha Baron-Cohen is already pencilled in to play the sexually-confused singer. Perry would play Mary Austin who was in a relationship with Mercury for six years in the 70s and remained a close friend and confidante right up until his death.
A source quoted in the Mirror implied the casting is not exactly confirmed. "Katy would love to be in the film," they said, "as she is such a huge fan. She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha."
Stephen Frears, something of a specialist in pop culture mocvies, is lined up to direct, and Baron Cohen is already working closely with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on getting his portrayal right.
The question remains: where would Perry find the inspiration to play the partner of a camp Englishman with a flamboyant stage presence and a taste for controversy? Maybe that ex-husband of hers could offer some advice . . .
Meanwhile Perry is suggesting that her next album will go into some dark areas lyrically, as she tackles the aftermath of her split with Russell Brand. Portraying the girlfriend of a gay man, creating angst-ridden misery music . . . nobody can accuse Perry of being unwilling to test the limits of her talent.
