Pete Doherty spooked by Amy Winehouse apparition

If you need any further evidence that drugs are a very bad thing, consider the latest ravings of Pete Doherty. The former Libertines and Babyshambles frontman, who seems to have spent more time in the dock on drugs charges in recent years than on stage, has convinced himself that his flat is haunted by the ghost of Amy Winehouse.

Authoritative sources, well OK a “friend” who spoke to The Sun, said, "he is utterly convinced that he has seen her ghost. A lot of people will think his visions are probably drug-induced [oh surely not] but he claims he is clean."

For many observers of the Doherty tragi-comedy, the words "claims he is clean" were the ones they expected to see engraved on the Doherty tombstone. It is apparent though that Doherty has been spooked by the untimely demise of his close friend Winehouse in July.

Doherty’s flat in Camden is close to where Winehouse died, after a career characterised by similar excesses to the ones which Doherty has long been prone. It might be hoped that the singer’s death might even be an incentive for Doherty to clean up his act, but don’t hold your breath.

Doherty ran away from the phantom Amy to Paris, where he is filming opposite Charlotte Gainsbourg in a movie in which he plays French writer Alfred De Musset. Expect numerous scenes of doomed romanticism and elegant wasting. It seems there are still plenty of people who will indulge Doherty's self-image as a tortured poet.
