Radiohead are "freak monkeys", Church claims

Radiohead are "freak monkeys with mediocre tunes". No, not a quote from a reasoned critique of their last album, but the considered opinion of the Westboro Baptist Church, a fundamentalist Christian group who have turned their ire (and presumably God’s) on the mild-mannered Oxford rockers.

The Church picketed the Radiohead show at the Sprint Center in Missouri, and issued a rather confusing statement. "You try to get the people to look at the nonsense and not the Wrath of God that abides upon them," was the snappy opener.

The Church’s message also included such lines as "God is undoing this nation and effecting all of your lives, with the moth that quietly eats the very fabric of your national garment. Radiohead is just such an event." Which, apart from stumbling into the common confusion about the difference between 'effect' and 'affect', would look great on future tour posters.

Radiohead associate Nigel Godrich (whose surname might also have annoyed the Church) seemed far from upset about the fracas and announced on Twitter that the protest was the highlight of the tour so far.

Previously the Church has picketed a Kansas show by Foo Fighters, provoking the band to respond with a cheery comedy ditty about homosexuality. For some reason, this was not accepted in the genial spirit that had been intended.

The Church does not clarify whether the "freak monkeys" of Radiohead would be more acceptable if they got back to bashing out a few catchy tunes rather than all that experimental electronica.
