Robbie’s new record

It’s been a long time coming but The Band's Robbie Robertson is set to release an album - his first ain 13 years. The LP includes three songs co-written by Eric Clapton, but this is no nostalgia-fest - How to Become Clairvoyant also features Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Robertson told Rolling Stone: ‘I think I've written some really good songs, and ... it turned out quite extraordinary.’ The album includes This Is Where I Get Off, a song about Robbie’s last days as the Band's guitarist main songwriter. Other tracks explore addiction, 60s idealism and ‘rock'n'roll's early reputation as the devil's music.’

Clapton appears on six tracks, and there are cameos from Steve Winwood, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, and Morello. Reznor provides ‘additional textures’ to one song – an instrumental - called Madame X. Robertson explained: ‘It's a really cinematic piece of music. I wanted Trent to contribute something, and he understood exactly what I was talking about and did something completely beautiful and haunting.’

A sneak preview of one song, When the Night Was Young, is available on the 429 Records website. Otherwise you’ll have to wait until April for the release of How to Become Clairvoyant.
