Rock down to, the courts

Singer Eddy Grant (older readers among you might remember the Londoner’s 80s classic Electric Avenue) has threatened to sue Damon Albarn’s odd cartoon band Gorillaz, after he claimed that they pinched one of his songs and didn’t so much as acknowledge that it wasn’t theirs.

Some fans thought the track Stylo contained a sample of the 1977 track Time Warp, but instead Grant alleges that the band have ‘infringed the copyright’, and that on top of them suffering the ignominy of being beaten by Boyzone to the top of the album charts, they may have to deal with legal action from a has-been.

‘I am outraged that the Gorillaz have infringed the copyright of my song Time Warp, claiming their song Stylo to be an original composition,’ he said, eyeing a nice payday, while EMI – who represent both acts – stepped back and committed nothing, saying: ‘a private matter between Eddy Grant and Gorillaz.’ Way to hedge your bets, record company.
