With the amount of weed he smokes, it was just a matter of time before Snoop Dogg lost complete touch with reality. At least it seems to have happened in a relatively benign form, with the Californian rapper now insisting on being called Snoop Lion, and claiming to be the reincarnation of a reggae legend.
"I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated," he said at a recent press conference. The fact that Marley died in 1981, when young Master Dogg had already been toddling around the ‘hood for ten years, doesn’t seem to have occurred to him, but then logic is an early casualty of heavy marijuana use. "I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn't have my third eye open, but its wide open right now."
The album, called Reincarnated, was inspired by the "spirit" that told Snoop to head in a reggae direction. "For this project, I had no intention of making a reggae album," he said, "but the spirit called me. Anytime the spirit calls you gotta know that it's serious and real."
The project also required a name change. "I didn't want to be Snoop Dogg on a reggae track," he said. "I wanted to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion, but I didn't know that until I went to the temple and received the name Snoop Lion from the Nyabingi priest. From that moment on, I started to understand why I was there and was able to create something magical in this project, something I haven't done before in my career."
We sense a hefty attack of the munchies arriving around September.
