Spice Girls fans are waiting with bated breath after an announcement this morning seemed to suggest that their 20th anniversary reunion was about to go ahead sans Posh Spice. However, band member Emma Bunton has warned people that no concrete plans have been made yet and talks continue behind the scenes.
A source told The Sun newspaper "This will be one of the biggest pop reunions of all time. There is a huge demand for the Spice Girls to get back together, especially with the nostalgia around the two-decade anniversary of their first release next summer." The source then added "Victoria wishes the girls the best of luck. She knows the reunion is on but has declined to be involved."
The source went onto say that Geri Halliwell, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Mel B had met and agreed to go ahead as a 4-piece. The source said "Mel (B) has been desperate to make this happen for a long time. For a long time they put off the idea of working any projects without her (Victoria) because they wanted to stay as a five-piece, but with the 20th anniversary coming up they realised it was a case of now or never.”
However, Baby Spice later refuted these claims telling Heart London listeners "If anything happens and it’s concrete, and we decide on something, I will let you know, but nothing’s happening at the moment". This seems to suggest that there is still room for Victoria to join in on the fun should she manage to carve out some time from her busy schedule.
Any reunion, be it as a 4-piece or with all 5 of the girls on board, is going to be huge financially as the Spice Girls mark 20 years since the release of their first Number 1 hit Wannabe. Dan Wootton, who wrote the Sun article, was sticking to his guns tweeting "And a note from me to people saying Emma "denied" story this AM. She didn't. But no official announcement will come until later this year."
