Spotify streams could influence chart

Free plays of online streaming music could be set to count towards chart placings, according to Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company.

However, don't start getting yourself on Spotify or We7 repeat clicking on your mate's band just yet. Talbot said that there are no immediate plans to bring them into the current set-up, which counts physical sales and downloads, but that it may have to integrate the new technology in if it wants to stay representative of what people want.

'I'm sure it [counting free music streaming plays] will come upon us quicker than we might anticipate. None of us really know when it will happen,' said Talbot. 'I think ultimately it's bound to happen. But that could be five years, it could be 10 years, it could be 20 years.

'(However) knowing what a stream is worth compared to a purchase of a download, for instance, is very difficult to identify at the moment.'
