Thank you, CHILE!!

There’s a classic Simpsons episode from way back in the early (and best) series where Spinal Tap come to Springfield. During the gig one of the band looks on the back of his guitar, where ‘Springfield’ is written on a piece of paper to remind them where they are. After a disastrous gig, he shouts at the crowd ‘Goodbye Springton, there will be no encore.’ Cue riot.

Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan was lucky that he didn’t spark off a riot of his very own making on Tuesday, when at the end of the Mode’s gig in the Peruvian capital of Lima, he shouted ‘Thank you very much, CHILE!’ to the 30,000 crowd.

That would have been embarrassing enough if the two countries hadn’t been historical enemies who between 1879 and 1884 fought a war over control of a mineral rich territory called the Atacama Desert. Oops. Almost as bad as calling the people of Springfield Shelbyvillians.
