The Super Who-mans

Paul McCartney did it in 2005, The Rolling Stones in 2006, Prince in 2007, Bruce Springsteen in 2009 and now The Who can claim the same accolade: they have entertained 99.9% of America during the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XLIV took place last night at the Sun Life Stadium in Florida, the usual residence for the Miami Dolphins. Sadly for them, though, they weren’t invited to take part in the grand finale of the NFL. Instead virgin finalists the New Orleans Saints battled it out with the Indianapolis Colts. For anyone outside of the Yankie shores, though, the favoured entertainment of the evening was of the musical sort at half time, thanks to original mod rockers The Who.

As ¾ of the crowd left their seats to cue for corndogs and a bottle of over priced Budweiser the Brit pensioners played a predictable medley of hits, starting with Pinball Wizard and followed by snippets of Baba O’Riley, Who Are You, We’re Not Gonna Take It, See Me Feel Me and Won’t Get Fooled Again. Luckily, there was no repeat of 2004’s infamous nipple flashes but instead a solid if somewhat lack lustre performance. If The Who weren’t the best band to ever take charge of the half time entertainment at the Super Bowl, then at the very least they are definitely the most recent. Oh, and Who won? Who cares!
