The Who among the shows coming to Manchester Arena

Summer in Manchester sees a host of music luminaries grace the Manchester Arena, starting with lavish shows from the Pet Shop Boys, The Who and Kings Of Leon. Since 1995 the Arena has been Manchester's premier venue for major touring shows in addition to staging the occasional prestige sporting event.

Since opening in 1995, the 21,000 capacity venue has hosted shows by the likes of U2, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Lady Gaga, New Order and Pavarotti, although the hottest box-office success was a local comedian called Peter Kay who set up a residency there in 2010 / 2011.

Sporting highlights at the Manchester Arena have included Commonwealth Games events in 2002, basketball matches between Britain and the USA, swimming championships and boxing bouts involving Mike Tyson, David Haye, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan.

Quadrophenia at the Arena

June sees the return of 80s pop supremos The Pet Shop Boys to the live arena, bringing the Manchester leg of their 'Electric' tour to the Arena on June 20. Expect the hits subtly remodelled, plenty of singalong choruses and some special visuals and costume changes.

A different musical constituency has been looking forward to the highlight of their musical year when The Who bring their critically-acclaimed stage show of Quadrophenia to the Manchester Arena, on June 23, forty years after the release of the concept album. For various reasons, the album had never been performed satisfactorily live after its release. The new show rectifies that, with Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend rediscovering the magic of their old work and finding room for tributes to their late bandmates Keith Moon and John Entwhistle. Far from a mere nostalgia trip, the show has rekindled interest in the glory days of The Who.

Southern rockers Kings of Leon may even admit to a few influences drawn from the English band. They bring their touring show to the Manchester Arena on June 24 playing new material from their sixth album as well as old favourites like 'Sex On Fire' and 'California Waiting'.

Tickets for all upcoming shows at the Manchester Arena are available from the website. Hospitality suites and VIP boxes are available for those who want to make their visit to the Arena a truly memorable night.
