Tom Waits confirms talk show dates

Tom Waits released his latest album Bad As Me last October, but has yet to play any of the songs live. That will change with two talk-show appearances in the USA. Waits will play on The Late Show with David Letterman on July 9 and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on July 10.

The appearances were originally scheduled for April but were postponed. Waits announced the rearranged shows on his Facebook page: "He will be talking with the hosts and giving the first live performance of songs from his latest recording, Bad As Me. Musicians joining Waits on stage include his son Casey Waits on drums, long time bassist Larry Taylor, guitarist David Hidalgo, keyboardist Augie Myers and guitarist Big Bill Morganfield.”

The appearances on the talk shows will fuel rumours that Waits might be ready to go out on the road for his first major tour since 2008’s Glitter and Doom world tour. He hasn’t played in the UK for four years, and any live dates would be sure to spark a frantic clamour for tickets.

Waits’s cult following includes Scarlett Johansson, who recorded an album of Waits covers, and Florence Welch, who dreams of Waits covering one of her songs. That seems unlikely to happen given Waits’s reputation for being very discerning about his choice of material

Waits’s film career continues to simmer along in the background. His latest project is Seven Psychopaths, the latest film from director Martin McDonough of In Bruges fame. Waits appears alongside Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken.
