Tom Waits fans eagerly anticipating the announcement of a new live tour will have to wait a little longer. Teasing clues on Waits’s website had promised an announcement, but it turns out to have concerned a brand new video.
The video for the rampaging anti-war track 'Hell Broke Luce' from Waits’s Bad As Me album, is an ambitious affair. "As most of you guessed, it’s a tour," Waits said, "a tour de force."
The film was conceived by Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan in collaboration with director Matt Mahurin. "Matt Mahurin has created an apocalyptic war dream to accompany the song 'Hell Broke Luce'," Waits said. "Kathleen and I envisioned it as an enlightened drill sergeant yelling the hard truths of war to a brand new batch of recruits. The video grew from the gnawing image of a soldier pulling his home, through a battlefield, at the end of a rope. I think you will agree, it's uplifting and fun."
In fact it’s uncompromisingly grim and relentless, but Waits’s warped sense of humour is evident in glimpses on the track and in the video. Keith Richards plays guitar, with Red Hot Chili Pepper Flea on bass and Waits’ son Casey on drums.
There is still no news of a tour to promote Bad As Me, although Waits did perform songs from the album on American chat shows in early July. He was evasive about possible live dates in his conversations with David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon, preferring to steer the conversation onto topics like his fondness for buying antique rat-traps on ebay.
