There’s one sure-fire way to guarantee a number 1 single these days and that’s having a the platform of a prime-time telly show, the UK’s tabloid backing and then tagging on the obligatory ‘it’s for charidee’ tag. Or that’s what the sceptics would say.

This year’s X-Factor charity song is a cover of David Bowie’s classic tune ‘Heroes’ and is aptly in aid of the British armed forces fighting in abroad and yesterday (28 Nov) saw it fly straight to the top of the UK singles chart. Also faring well in the single chart was another song given a lift up from a heavy publisced TV advertising campaign (John Lewis Christmas ad) was Ellie’s Goulding’s cover of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ which went in at number 2.
