Who would have funked it?

Only Fools & Horses, The Wombles, Postman Pat - the UK has written and produced some of the finest TV theme tunes ever heard by human ears. Sadly, telly cutbacks have caused producers to sacrifice inventive theme tunes and turn to generic library music for their jingles these days. Booo! But there are a couple of major shows who invested in a theme tune and are reaping the financial rewards....

According to PRS For Music (the chaps who calculate the royalties), the theme-tunes from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and The Weakest Link raked in £166m for their composers in the last year, making them the UK's biggest musical export.

'When we have exports of TV programmes that are exported around the world, we're getting better at tracking down that revenue, working out what's been broadcast’ said Karen Buse from PRS, adding ‘we had some big bands, particularly in Europe and South America, going to very large stadia. We get very good rates from concert promoters in these territories.’
