ZZ Top look to the future with new album
Legendary American rockers ZZ Top return with a new album, a mere nine years after their last release. The album is called La Futura, and has a release date of September 10.
The album will be the Texan band’s fifteenth studio album and features production input from Rick Rubin as well as the band’s Billy Gibbons. Gibbons says that the new record will offer references to ZZ Top’s bluesy roots as well as reflecting current music.
Rubin’s involvement was the key to this blend of the classic and contemporary. "Rick's so extremely wide-ranging," Gibbons said. "For instance, his Johnny Cash work is exemplary. Let's call this a mashup in the sense that his Johnny Cash sensibility has been called into play as much as his Slayer mindset."
ZZ Top have been in existence for an astonishing 42 years with the same line-up. The key to their longevity, apart from their eagerness to live up to their image as "beer drinkers and hell raisers”, is their willingness to listen to new music and incorporate it into their own sound. The new album has hip-hop influences sitting alongside the old blues and hard rock, while the track 'It’s Too Easy Manana' is written by alternative country hipsters Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.
